Home improvement platform Thumbtack released a report on habits and attitudes surrounding spring cleaning to-do lists. While the report is full of information to help you tackle your annual spring cleaning head-on, we’re most interested in the one spot everyone seems to be avoiding in their homes.

The brand surveyed over 1,000 adults via SurveyMonkey for spring cleaning statistics, conducted from February 25-26 of 2025—and the results are surprising.

Maybe you think most homeowners are trying to forget their bathroom deep scrub or closet remodel. While it’s true closet decluttering is the most procrastinated task, it still gets done at some point. There’s one cleaning chore that over a quarter of Thumbtack’s users have never done—even once.

The Most Neglected Area of the Home

According to Thumbtack’s survey, 33% of people say they’re just not that great about cleaning their windows. 25% of the survey participants added that they’ve never even cleaned their curtains before.

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your windows, and with sunny skies ahead, you’ll want an unobstructed view of blossoming florals and growing gardens. Cleaning your windows will also let in extra natural light so you (and your indoor plants) can soak up the summer vibes even from the inside. 

How to Clean Curtains

Thumbtack’s expert tip is to actually clean your curtains before getting to your windows. While it might seem like the windows should be washed off first, experts from the home service site recommend cleaning your blinds or curtains first, so dust and dirt don’t accumulate on the windows.

If you have cloth curtains, you can pop them in the washer and call it a day. You could also vacuum them first to remove large chunks of dust and dirt, before washing the curtains according to its instructions. If you need to hand wash them, a large bucket or bathtub usually works best. Machine or hang-dry them while you work on cleaning off the rest of your windows. 

Blinds are slightly more tedious, but don’t require removal from the window to clean. First, dust them off with a cloth or duster to catch all the grime accumulated on the blinds. Once that’s done, you can wipe them down with a wet cloth.

Cleaning Interior and Exterior Windows

For the interior, you can use a window cleaner or opt for our favorite homemade window cleaning solution. Scrub your windows with a cleaning cloth or paper towel to remove any dirt, and then dry the window completely with a clean cloth to ensure there aren’t streaks or water spots left behind.

Exterior window cleaning can be a tricky task if your house has multiple floors, so many people opt to call in the professionals for this home project. If you’re willing to take on the task, you can try hosing off your windows directly before using a long-handled window wiper on them.

Cleaning Window Tracks

We’re not done with windows just yet. Now, it’s time to open up your windows and clean the edges and tracks thoroughly. A handheld vacuum or vacuum with crevice attachments can help you with dusty spots, while a wet rag will grab any dirt collecting in the corners of your windows. A simple bottle of dish soap or basic cleaning spray can make it easier to remove buildup.
