Try Jamie Oliver’s Way of Spicing Up Mulled Wine for the Holidays

Mulled wine is a classic winter drink served at festive gatherings, holiday markets, and restaurants during the cold months. If you’re craving the spiced beverage but don’t feel like venturing outdoors, you’re in luck—mulled wine is incredibly easy to make at home.

Celebrity chef, restaurateur, and cookbook author Jamie Oliver mastered a mulled wine recipe he couldn’t help but share with the world on Instagram. Although he has featured loads of recipe tips and tricks (like adding avocado to pastry dough), his fans have taken a certain liking to his latest twist on mulled wine.

In a large pot, the renowned chef mixes a splash of red wine with loads of citrus—think orange peels, lime peels, lemon peels, and orange juice. He then tosses in granulated sugar, grated ginger, a whole vanilla bean, cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, and cloves.

Once the wine starts bubbling, Oliver adds star anise and the rest of the wine bottle.

“The main tip from me to make the best mulled wine is letting everything mull away and warm up gently so the flavors have time to mingle with the wine,” said Oliver in his Instagram post.

True to his word, Oliver allows a small portion of wine to warm with the spices, fruits, and sugar before adding in the rest of his wine. In doing so, Oliver releases flavor from each ingredient, while the bold notes of the wine infuse.

Once the mulled wine is ready to serve, Oliver tops the drinks off with orange slices and cinnamon sticks. Whether serving your wine in individual glasses or a large pitcher, garnishes are necessary for finalizing the concoction. Whole cranberries, star anise, rosemary, and dried citrus slices are festive touches that will make every sip flavorful.

If you prefer your drinks on ice, mulled wine can also be served chilled. While it is usually presented warm in a mug or glass, no one says you can’t pop in a few ice cubes for a refreshing burst of flavor.
