Happy Ugadi 2025: Ugadi, also referred to as Samvatsaradi, is an important Hindu festival. Regarded as the New Year in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka, it falls on the first day of Chaitra month as per the lunisolar calendar.

Ugadi or Yugadi symbolises the onset of spring and a fresh start. The festival is celebrated with great zeal with different rituals and delicious festive meals.

Ugadi Traditions In Andhra Pradesh And Telangana

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, people begin the Ugadi celebrations with Abhyangam (oil bathing). After that, they wear new clothes. They adorn their homes with mango leaves and intricate rangolis to welcome prosperity. People also visit temples and seek blessings as they usher in the new year.

On the day, families make a special dish called Ugadi Pachadi, which is a unique combo of six different flavours. The pachadi is a mix of sweet, sour, salty, bitter, spicy, and tangy. Each of these flavours indicates different moments of life and is one of the key traditions of the festival.

The dish is made from nallimpu which lends bitterness, jaggery that brings sweetness, raw mango for tanginess, tamarind for sourness, along with salt and chilli.

Another highlight is Panchanga Savanam—wherein, temple priests or astrologers announce predictions for the upcoming year. These horoscopes/forecasts are used by families for directions on many domains of life, including personal development, career, and health.

Ugadi Celebrations In Karnataka

Like in Andhra and Telangana, celebrations in Karnataka involve people taking ritual baths. People clean their homes and decorate them with mango leaves, flowers, and rangolis. People also wear new clothes.

One of the customs on Ugadi in Karnataka is consuming Bevu-Bella, which represents the bittersweet moments of life. The bevu-bella mixture is made up of jaggery and flowers of neem tree or neem leaves. In the festive meal, people prepare special dishes like holige or obbattu, kosambari and mango chutney.

On this day, people seek their parents’ blessings for a healthy and prosperous year, visit temples and perform special pujas.

Ugadi is a time for thankfulness, reflection and celebration of happiness. It implies restoration and a new beginning, inspiring others to let go of the past and meet the future with optimism and positivity. Family members who come together strengthen ties and honour their many cultural heritages.
