Sunlight is considered the best source of vitamin D, but during the scorching summer heat, going out in the sun at the wrong time can do more harm than good. Vitamin D strengthens our bones by improving calcium absorption, boosts immunity, and prevents diseases. It also improves mood, reduces the risk of depression, and supports muscle function and overall health.

Vitamin D is one of the essential nutrients our body needs daily. Although sunlight is its most abundant natural source, excessive sun exposure or going out at the wrong time can be harmful and may not provide the intended benefits. If your goal is to obtain vitamin D from sunlight, you should consider the right time and duration of exposure.

The Golden Time to Get Vitamin D From Sunlight

The best time to get sunlight for vitamin D during summer, which prevails in most parts of our country, is between 8 am and 10 am.

During these two hours, there is an optimal amount of UVB rays, which are responsible for vitamin D production and the sun is not as intense at this time, reducing the risk of sunburn and heatstroke.

For individuals with light skin, 15-30 minutes of sun exposure is sufficient, whereas those with darker skin may require 30-45 minutes. Although the sun’s rays are most intense between 11 am and 2 pm, when UVB exposure is highest, stepping out during this period can lead to excessive heat, sunburn, and dehydration. To avoid exhaustion and discomfort, it is advisable to stay indoors during this time unless necessary.

Sunburn, dehydration, and long-term skin damage are more likely when the sun is at its peak. During summer, you may think that stepping out before 8 am or after 4 pm is safer for vitamin D absorption. However, UVB rays are weakest during these hours, making them ineffective for vitamin D synthesis.

While morning walks and evening jogs are excellent for fitness, they do not contribute significantly to vitamin D intake. Although sunscreen is crucial for skin protection, it blocks UVB rays. To balance sun protection and vitamin D absorption, try spending 10-15 minutes in the sun before applying sunscreen. Ensure that your hands, feet, and face are exposed to maximise absorption.

For added benefits, engage in light physical activity, such as a morning walk, yoga, or stretching exercises, while getting your sunlight. This not only enhances vitamin D production but also keeps you active and healthy.
