Why Tokischa Gets Ready In Silence

Why Tokischa Gets Ready In Silence

There’s never a dull moment with Tokischa, the Dominican rapper who’s taken over the Latin music scene with her raunchy lyrics and unapologetic persona. Whether it’s kissing Madonna on stage or dressing up as a Catholic priest at the Latin Billboards, Tokischa’s knack for raising eyebrows is a talent on its own.

Ever since songs like “Delincuente” and “Tucuntazo,” as well as collaborations with J Blavin, Rosalía, and Marshmello, made her a household name, the artist has used fashion and lyricism to push her own agenda: to just be herself. It’s not surprising, then, to learn that Tokischa, who is becoming a mainstay at fashion shows around the world and has appeared in campaigns for brands like Jean Paul Gaultier, describes her personal style as “strict.”

“I will say it’s very strict to me, and it’s very loyal and particular to me,” she exclusively tells InStyle. Tokischa’s look to sit front row at the Coperni show during Paris Fashion Week was perfect proof of her singular style. She wore a crisp white Coperni column dress adorned with a fuzzy beige trim, accessorized with diamond Cartier jewelry and white Loubutin shoes—all styled by Caitlyn Martinez.

Going sans bra and letting her breasts peek through the sheer fabric of the dress gave the overall look just the right amount of angelic innocence and devilish sultriness, straddling that line she loves to blur with her music, persona, and style. She says she’s entering a more glamorous era than in the past, when she embraced an androgynous part of herself, which explains her Bardot-style updo—the work of Arnaud Boujon—as well as the clean, minimal makeup done by Thora Daniels.

Ahead of her outing to the Coperni fall/winter 2025 show, Tokischa talked to InStyle about her fashion inspirations, her styling process, and why she loves silence.

On Her Coperni Look

Oh! Cunty, angel, diva.

On Choosing Her Outfits

It depends on the era I’m in. For example, when I was in my “Popola Presidente” era, everything was suits; it was very strict in the aesthetic. Now, I’m in a more diva, playful, gowns era, so everything has to be according to my aesthetic or era that I’m having right now. So I will say that’s the first thing that we have in mind when selecting and looking for a show; it has to go with the era.

On Her Getting Ready Playlist

Silence. I don’t play music when I’m getting ready. I like to be in total silence, and I like to just be in the getting-ready vibe. I really don’t be listening to music. That’s so weird. I don’t know why, but I think it’s kind of overwhelming for me because I have somebody doing my hair, somebody doing my face, and I’m also thinking about what I’m doing. I’m a perfectionist; I like to be looking at every detail, and I like to be present, and I like to be on point, so I really don’t play music when I’m getting ready.

Her Show Day Routine

I will say fasting. Yeah, fasting because my body works differently. When I have a big breakfast, it slows down. I feel rested, I feel different, so if I’m fasting, my body is kind of more energetic. I like drinking tea and water, but I like going to shows fasting if it’s in the morning.

Her Fashion Icks

Sequins, rhinestones, shiny, flashy stuff. That’s the thing that I like the least.

On Attending Paris Fashion Week

I really love the storytelling of the shows. That’s my favorite thing, to figure out what the designer wants to say, and also being a “Fashion Police” is so much fun all the time. Also the looks, of course. I’m starting to get to see shows where they have a creative set. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a show with such a playful set as the Coperni show. It was so cool, so playful, so different, so I think… yeah.

On Her Post-Show Plans

Dinner! Because remember I told you I was fasting. So, of course, dinner and sleep.
