On this World Health Day, let us remember that prevention is always better than cure. It’s time for public health authorities, educators, parents, and physicians to come together.
A healthy childhood is the strongest foundation for a healthier nation.
As we commemorate World Health Day in 2025, it’s time to turn our attention to the health of our children. In pediatrics, preventive healthcare is no longer optional—it’s becoming essential. Dr Kushal Agrawal, HOD, Department of Neonatology and Paediatrics, KVR Hospital, Kashipur shares all you need to know:
India is facing a hidden pandemic driven by rising childhood obesity, early-onset Type 2 diabetes, and the adverse effects of excessive screen time. These issues are no longer confined to urban areas; children in small towns and rural regions are increasingly affected. Shockingly, over one in five school-age children in India is overweight or obese. Contributing factors include sedentary lifestyles, sugary snacks, and poor dietary habits. Obesity in childhood often leads to early development of diabetes and heart disease. To help families make informed choices, public health initiatives must prioritize nutritional education in schools, healthier midday meal programs, and clear food labeling.
Screen time is another growing concern. Hours spent on phones and tablets affect children’s physical health, disrupt sleep, influence mood, and impair attention spans. While public health officials can help by creating safe community play areas and launching digital hygiene campaigns, parents still need better awareness. School health programs must embrace preventive care by standardizing regular BMI checks, dietary counseling, and physical activity. Recognizing and rewarding schools that adopt these practices can accelerate much-needed change.
