Yes, These Limited-Edition Jeans Have a Built-In Cheese Pocket
On-the-go snacking just took on a whole new meaning.
Kerrygold is getting into the fashion game by partnering with fellow Irish brand Native Denims — and they’re dropping The Cheese Pocket Jeans. This limited-run denim, crafted by the slow fashion brand and decorated with signature Kerrygold details, has a dedicated pocket for stashing a slim Kerrygold Cheese Snack. Yes, that’s right.
“We set out to provide our fans with a fun, convenient way to carry our perfectly snackable cheese. After all, Kerrygold cheese snacks are so good you’ll want to have them with you wherever you go,” Kate Saul, vice president of marketing at Ornua Foods North America, Kerrygold’s parent company, tells Food & Wine. “The Kerrygold Cheese Pocket Jeans are crafted with brand lovers in mind, featuring a beautifully embroidered cheese pocket with Irish buttercup motifs, keeping our fans ready for any snacking (or fashion) occasion.”
Why cheese, and why in a pocket? It’s a readily available snack between work meetings, sure — but Kerrygold also points toward its Irish roots. Local superstitions advise hiding cheese in your clothing, which folktales say could ward off “mischievous” faeries. (There’s no word on how this setup might fare during the summer’s hottest months, but we can imagine it’s not too pretty.)
Blue jeans, on the other hand, have a more practical backstory. Historians explain that this teeny fifth pocket is a functional design remnant from denim’s blue-collar origins. Created for railroad workers and gold miners in the late 1890s, Levi Strauss & Co.’s jeans featured a small pocket for carrying tools, loose gold nuggets, and other valuables. This concept still holds true today — at least for these jeans.
“We put a focus on the smallest pocket of our denim jeans, giving it an elevated design worthy of holding beloved Kerrygold cheese snacks,” Dave Cesari, managing director at Native Denims, said in a statement. “We’re proud to partner with Kerrygold, a brand who like us, has put quality Irish goods on the map.”
If that sounds like the ideal addition to your closet, you’re in luck: The brands are giving away 500 pairs of these specialty jeans. The most dedicated cheese enthusiasts can toss their hat into the ring on the giveaway’s website beginning on March 19. If you’d really like to solidify Worried about missing your chance to snag a pair? You can also sign up to receive a text message when it opens.
If Kerrygold’s keen on pivoting to fashion design, they’re already in the right industry. One of the biggest color trends of last year was butter yellow, as designers Tory Burch to Sandy Liang and even Burberry embraced this sunny shade. (The Irish butter brand even deemed their butter’s signature beta carotene-rich hue as the “color of the summer” last June.) On the Oscars red carpet earlier this month, Timothée Chalamet was also in good company.
We have lots of love for the rich flavor that butter and cheese bring to recipes. And now, you can wear your heart on your sleeve — err, jeans.
